31st Oct 2024 SEO Blog 4 minutes to read

Headings are important for SEO as they help search engines and users to understand the purpose and the content structure of a web page. When creating any content for a website, it is important to have a clearly defined structure such as one main heading and relevant subheadings throughout.

What are Heading Tags & why use them?

Heading Tags are HTML tags that are used to organise content on a web page within a logical order structure of hierarchical importance. Ranging from H1 being the most important to H6 being the weakest. Using the correct Heading Tags in the correct order is important to gain the most SEO benefit from the web page.

The most often used Heading Tags

Although H5 and H6 tags do exist. It is quite rare for content to need these Heading tags.

Benefits of using Heading Tags

Structure

Think of a web page, just like a newspaper article, essay or press release, we begin with a single main heading known as H1 tag or (H1 heading). After using a single H1 tag, we can use H2 tags, H3 tags, and so on. This correct usage of headings helps the search engines understand and decide the importance of topics on a web page. For the user, heading tags guide the reader through the content and highlights the main sections and key points of the copy.

Readability and User Experience

Headings make the content visually appealing, easier to read and to manage points in bitesize chunks. When looking at large amounts of content on a webpage, this can be intimidating. Users want clear and concise answers, and they want them quickly.

Context

Headings that include relevant keywords to the content, reinforces the context of the page. Just like writing an essay, you need one good point per heading. Search engines use headings to determine with relevance of the copy surrounding the heading. The use of good headings and well written content can help the web page to rank better in the search listings.

In terms of SEO, the role of the header tag has, in the past, come under a great deal of scrutiny. However, you won’t come across many SEOs who would recommend you ignore them when crafting your website content.

Why are H1 headings important?

The H1 heading is important as search engines use them to understand what the main topic is about. The H1 tag reinforces the relevance of the webpage, provides a perfect opportunity to include your keywords and boost your relevance for those all-important search terms.

There should only be one H1 heading on any page. It could be detrimental having multiple H1 tags, because by having two headlines, you are effectively diluting the SEO power between them, confusing both the search engine and the user.

Whether a human or a search engine, the H1 tag tells exactly what the content below is all about. As we all know, a strong headline can make all the difference when it comes to persuading us to invest our time in reading on.

How to use H2 headings

The H2 heading is the first subheading after the H1 tag. In the eyes of the search engines, the H2 heading, is the most important tag on the page. You can use multiple H2 tags on a web page.

This is the perfect tag for those all-important sub-headings that will break up the visual monotony of your web copy. H2 tags will guide the reader’s eye down and give them a quick overview without having to spend too long going through the rest of the page.

Other headings

H3, H4, H5 tags are ranked lower again. The H3 tags are best used to support points made within the H2 tag. Equally, H4 tags can be used to support points as a subsection with the H3 tag.

The additional tags may be used where you wish to highlight a quote or a list, but we highly recommend using them in order, for example, use H3’s before H4’s. This makes the content easier to understand and digest for readers. These smaller headers have a similar weighting to the main text.

In most cases, it is best to use the following headings:
